I agree that enterprises probably need the two-pronged approach of both an internal, private Twitter-like solution (ala Yammer) and a public face on Twitter. I think the support / helpdesk example is a good one. Likewise, marketing and planning around corporate events, like trade shows, would benefit from public tweeting to update potential attendees on venue, dates, etc. It would be great if a single system let you tweet internally or externally (think dm-ing the public).

One has to wonder why Twitter didn’t seize on the opportunity to create an enterprise version. Perhaps they were hoping for a third party to create a solution on top of their platform. Speaking from experience, I’ve found the process of getting a team up and running with private Twitter accounts is much more of a pain than it should be. Yammer gets this right and makes it ridiculously simple to get your organization up and running. It will be interesting to see how (or if) Twitter responds.
