Hey:

Interesting response. I'd really like to talk with you a little more, and perhaps arrange a time to interview you about your plans. Would you be in touch?

You have my email, or call me at 866-WorkHabit and ask one of the folks to put you through to me.

I'm looking forward to learning more.

Jonathan,

I think you're right that "at this point" there is only one trick, but we're going to show there are more tricks buried within.

Web 2.0 unleashed a ton of new tools and networks on the public, and social networking continues to grow (although the number of new networks is slowing.) There are numerous ways to develop community for a business, and I think many larger brands who are already developing communities are missing the bigger picture when they use a proprietary tool or embed something on their own site. By building their own, they are expecting consumers to come and participate in one more network, only theirs is limited only to that brand. Why? According to our research so far, 35% of Twitter users follow brands and 94% of those users have followers.

Twitter provides an existing user base of millions, it's a network people use daily - providing ongoing connection to that brand, they will actively network with other people, and greater than 50% access Twitter from a mobile device.

WorkHabit does fantastic work, and you partner with companies that provide tools or software to build communities. Cherp's focus is to provide another option, and we think Twitter can provide lasting benefit rather than just short term marketing, but it can do that too.

1. At this point we'll work with anyone we think can either get value from the existing Twitter userbase, or who could benefit from community development.
2. We have some technical resources but we're also going to partner with programming talent as needed.
3. It was always going to be Cherp.us. I wanted to do something different. We're making Cherp into a verb, so "Cherp Us" will make more sense over time and become part of the brand language.
4. I think it's more about building the community within Twitter and here's why this benefits brands who do - at this point the market is on Twitter. I love Tumblr, I think it's awesome but it's more blog than network so it's easier for people to find other users on Twitter and connect. Plus, Twitter has multiples of the users that Tumblr or Plurk enjoy. I also think Twitter is more accessible to consumers and less technical folk, whereas Plurk is "how do we reinvent Twitter, only different." I think it's too late to the game and Twitter already has the market. I'll be talking more about this soon, so check back.
5. Government needs our help as bad as anyone, so yes, I'd love to help government get connected. The flurry of activity around Hurricane Gustav shows that Twitter has some utility.

Well, I think you're the only one who is going to be able to monetize twitter anytime soon, so more power to you.

It's a "one trick pony" product at this point, and I'd really like to hear how specifically you think you can drive value with a consultancy?

I can see: 1) messaging for marketing purposes (we handle your updates) 2) api changes to various platforms (though this isn't a "real pain" in my experience as twitter integration is cake 3) account buildout services so you can build a connected network and 4) building next generation services with twitter (a client, a data mining tool, etc).

So what's the focus of cherp, specifically?

Interesting concept, branding a company's blog or cave drawings around Twitter.

I have a few questions off the cuff that others may be asking too. Do you mind?

1. Are you focusing solely on businesses with an online presence? And any geography, or will you work with firms in the United States as equal territory to those in Kuwait?

2. If you're not a web design firm, will you be partnering with such firms or other individuals who can help make things happen on the back-end with the companies you work with? Because as you know, many companies lack the know-how and in-house resources to make things happen without someone telling them what to do.

3. Why the name Cherp? And despite the fact cherp.com is taken, why not settle on some other name to take advantage of the dot-com reputation?

4. I like your idea of building community around Twitter, but what do you say to an organization using, say, Plurk or Tumblr to send messages around? Would you work with them around the same ideas as Twitter but using what they have, or would you refuse to work with them?

5. I think you'd receive great business helping government agencies see the Twitter light and I'd be willing to help you out there. Are you looking for help?

Ya know, I think it's pretty brilliant.

Where there's a market there should be someone to monetize it.

Was just having this discussion with a online veteran who told me that the problem with Twitter was that there was no way to monetize it.......

Enter Cherp!

Best of luck!!!

Randall and Geekmommy (Lucretia) thanks! This has been such a fantastic week. I think people are starting to realize what Http://cherp.us is all about. We will be putting some meat on the bones over the next week, so I would greatly appreciate the feedback.

Cheers!
